Montreal's residential housing stock is unique in Canada. Brick triplexes from the 1920s–1950s with their exterior spiral staircases and oak hardwood floors. We know them inside out. Stone foundations that seep, vaulted cellars, 70-year-old galvanized plumbing stacks, fuse panels still found in unrenovated units.

In neighbourhoods like Hochelaga, Verdun or Mercier, a large proportion of the housing stock dates from before 1960. This type of construction requires a different approach than a 1990s suburban home. You can't just tear out and redo as in a new unit.
